Set in a village in China around 1966, a poor butcher, Chen, has lost his wife in a village fire, and his father to illness, and now his daughter Su Li is ailing as well. Chen blames his spate of bad luck on his poor aged mother. A monk sends Chen to Putuo Shan to seek the help of Guan Yin to find a cure for his daughter. Chen faces an arduous and obstacle-filled journey, which (as it often happens) teaches him some valuable lessons on life and compassion and changes him for the better. When at last Chen finds the temple in Putuo Shan where Bodhisattva Guan Yin is said to be dwelling, the same monk who sent Chen on this quest informs him that Bodhisattva Guan Yin has already helped cure Su Li, and that he has to go home to thank her personally. Chen returns home and finds his daughter cured, thanks to help of his mother - who he finally realises is Bodhisattva Guan Yin.
